MIAMI — The world's largest cruise ship — the size of almost four city blocks — is set to begin its maiden voyage Saturday as it leaves from the Port of Miami. According to Royal Caribbean, when Icon of the Seas sets sail on Jan. 27, 2024, it will become the largest cruise ship in the world. After construction for Icon of the Seas was completed at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the ship went through its first phase of sea trials in June 2023. It has officially replaced Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world. To learn more about MSC Cruises’ itineraries and experience on board its ships, click here.

Later, I look him up, and it appears that on land, he’s a financial adviser in a crisp gray suit, probably a pillar of his North Chicago community. “They asked me three times if I needed medication,” he says of the security people who apparently interrogated him in full view of others having breakfast. I usually tan very evenly, but something about the discombobulation of life at sea makes me forget the regular application of sunscreen. As I walk down the streets of Charlotte Amalie in my fluorescent Icon of the Seas cap, an old Rastafarian stares me down. As I slink back to the ship after my brief jailbreak, the locals stand under umbrellas to gaze at and photograph the boat that towers over their small capital city.

MSC Seashore will be departing on the first Caribbean and Bahamas cruise on November 20. Sailing from her homeport of Miami, Florida, the 169,500 gross tons, 4,560-passenger cruise ship will be based in the US permanently. MSC World America will offer a futuristic cruise experience with groundbreaking design, unique dining experiences, and unforgettable onboard entertainment. The layout of the ship will be similar to its sister ship, MSC World Europa, but will specifically tailored to appeal to guests from North America. The cruise ship will also feature the cruise line’s signature Central Park that will have more live plants and trees than ever before.

It turns out that the aft is the stern of the ship, or, for those of us who don’t know what a stern or an aft are, its ass. The nose of the ship, responsible for separating the waves before it, is also called a bow, and is marked for passengers as the FWD, or forward. The part of the contemporary sailing vessel where the malls are clustered is called the midship. It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots. Vibrant, oversignifying colors are stacked upon other such colors, decks perched over still more decks; the only comfort is a row of lifeboats ringing its perimeter. There is no imposed order, no cogent thought, and, for those who do not harbor a totalitarian sense of gigantomania, no visual mercy.
With the launch of Icon of the Seas and other innovations from the cruise line, these numbers will only grow. The 250,800-ton ship will have eight neighborhoods and never-before-seen advancements, such as a swim-up bar, a new adults-only retreat, and an expanded Royal Promenade. The Promenade has more than 15 restaurants, bars and lounges and floor-to-ceiling ocean views. The marvel of engineering took 900 days to build and has a capacity for up to 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members. Whether you’re on a short getaway or weeklong wander, conquer record-breaking thrills and discover epic ways to chill at the award-winning Perfect Day at CocoCay. Enjoy a plethora of things to do before your cruise out of Miami. If you crave an exhilarating day of adventure on the water, head to Oleta State Park for a myriad of water sports in the Biscayne Bay. If you’re needing an art fix, explore the Perez Art Museum or historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. If a break in nature is needed, there’s no shortage of places to experience wildlife up close, head to Zoo Miami or Miami Seaquarium for interactive shows and encounters.
MSC Seascape, the new flagship from MSC Cruises that is coming to Miami later this year, completed a construction milestone this past week when the cruise ship passed sea trials. Today the ship docks at Royal Caribbean’s own Bahamian island, the Perfect Day at CocoCay. (This appears to be the actual name of the island.) A comedian at the nightclub opined on what his perfect day at CocoCay would look like—receiving oral sex while learning that his ex-wife had been killed in a car crash (big laughter). But the reality of the island is far less humorous than that.
